Marches

The

The System: 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons

Starting Level: 1st, using standard array or point-buy.

Limitations: Human, Dwarf, Elf, Half-Elf, and Halfling are known to Oerth. The other typical starting races are possible but will be seen as aberrations or the offspring of gods. Monstrous races are not allowed.

Your Character: A basic backstory with 1-2 hooks is helpful, message me if you want to get into regional lore/politics/whatever. I assume you'll be mostly moral, occasionally greedy, self-directed but open to quests.

Lore and Background Speedrun: This will quickly summarize the background of the campaign for the purpose of helping you choose and name characters. This always explains what accents I give NPCs.

  • History

    • There was an Age of Chaos where law battled chaos for a thousand years. Men fought on both sides.

    • There was an Age of Law after chaos was defeated. The Summer Kingdoms arose and Things Were Great.

    • It is now the Age of Seven Kings. The Summer Kingdoms collapsed, Things Were Not So Great, and the god Maes showed up, and Things Got Decent Again.

    • It is currently the year 499, Age of Seven Kings, and Things Are Not Great again. A civil war (the Wildflower War) is destroying the massive Anguin Empire in the East. It’s Really Bad Right Now.

    • In the West, there is the Whistling Marches, a wild wintry forest full of mountains, magic, ruins, and danger. In the Marches is the Duchy of Marlenk, an outpost and castle where campaign starts.

  • Kingdoms in the East

    • Offenweilurg is fantasy Germany, loyal to the fantasy pope (Pontiff Friso of the Maesian Church)

    • Ardum is fantasy England, who renounced the fantasy pope and now worship Ovantus, a chaotic nature god.

    • Vinturthur is an alliance of fantasy Slavs. They worship a variety of gods and want independence.

    • Ghisri is far-away fantasy Persia.

    • Numia is far-away fantasy Carthage.

  • Kingdoms in the West

    • Various border realms including

      • Marlenk, where natives sound like Londoners but there’s so many outsiders it doesn’t matter.

      • The Kingdom of Garten, where the murderer of the Emperor still rules.

    • Avendeux is fantasy France, who have rebuilt after the cursed collapse of old fantasy France called Hespoine.

  • Other Races

    • Dwarves. Tolkien-esque dwarves except I do them as Norse.

    • Elves. The largest of the faerie folk, tricky types, sensitive to iron, not the metal-forging elves of Tolkien.

    • Halflings. Literally hobbits.

    • Goblins. Bane of Oerth. Biters, gnashers, taloned and unreasonable.

    • Not-in-this-setting: Dragonborn, tieflings, goliaths.
